Switching Medicare Supplement Carriers: What You Need to Kno

If you're considering switching your Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to a new carrier, it’s important to understand the process and what to expect. Whether you're looking for a more affordable option, better coverage, or better customer service, changing your Medigap plan can offer you greater flexibility and financial savings.

Why Switch Medicare Supplement Carriers?

There are several reasons why you might want to switch Medicare Supplement carriers, including:

  • Lower premiums: You may find a plan with the same benefits at a more affordable price.
  • Better customer service: Switching to a carrier with a stronger reputation for customer care might be important to you.
  • Improved coverage options: You might need a plan that better fits your evolving healthcare needs.
  • No longer satisfied with your current carrier: Perhaps your current carrier has raised premiums, changed their policies, or you simply aren’t satisfied with their service.

When Can You Switch Medicare Supplement Carriers?

Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, which have specific enrollment periods, you can switch Medicare Supplement carriers at any time of the year. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

  • Guaranteed Issue Rights: If you switch carriers during your Open Enrollment Period (6 months after you first enroll in Medicare Part B), you are guaranteed to be accepted by the new carrier without medical underwriting (i.e., you cannot be denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions or health status).

  • Outside the Open Enrollment Period: If you're switching outside of your Open Enrollment Period, the new carrier may require medical underwriting. This means the carrier could review your health history and deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on your health status.

  • Medicare Supplement Plan Availability: Not all Medigap plans are available with every carrier, so you’ll need to check whether the same plan you currently have is offered by the new company.

Steps to Switch Medicare Supplement Carriers

  1. Compare Plans:
Research different Medicare Supplement plans offered by various carriers. You may find a plan that provides the same or better coverage for a lower premium.

  2. Check Eligibility:
Make sure you qualify for the new plan and understand whether it requires medical underwriting. This will depend on whether you’re in your Open Enrollment Period or not.

  3. Apply with the New Carrier:
Once you've selected a new carrier, complete the application process with them. Ensure that the coverage will begin once your current coverage ends.

  4. Cancel Your Old Plan:
After you’re approved for the new plan and coverage has begun, cancel your old Medigap plan. You should avoid canceling it before your new coverage starts to avoid any gaps in coverage.

  5. Ensure Continuous Coverage:
It's crucial that there is no gap in your coverage when switching plans. If you have any doubts about the process, we can help ensure that everything transitions smoothly.

Things to Keep in Mind When Switching

  • Review the details: Before switching, make sure the new plan offers the same level of coverage, especially for services you regularly use (e.g., prescription drugs, specialists).

  • Consider any waiting periods: Some plans may have a waiting period for certain benefits when you switch. Ensure you’re fully informed about any waiting periods associated with your new plan.

  • Medigap Plan Type: If you are switching from one Medigap plan to another (e.g., from Plan F to Plan G), make sure you're fully aware of the benefits provided by each plan, as coverage levels may vary.

  • No Loss of Coverage: If you switch plans properly, you should not experience any loss of coverage. The key is to make sure your new plan kicks in before the old one is canceled.
